BookRhythm had the pleasure of spending some time with Donna Gallagher and wanted to ask her some questions so that you, her fans, learn a little more about this award winning author.
Q. What/Who inspires you?
A. People that overcome adversity to live a happy, grateful and generous life.
Q. Hardest aspect of writing? Best/Easiest?
A. The best is finally seeing my characters and their stories come to life on the page. The hardest is receiving edits, I always feel quite illiterate when I see all the mistakes I’ve made. Thank goodness for editors. Reading reviews can be a hazard!
Q. Who is your writing hero?
A. My favorite author, N.j. Walters. I love her books and she has written sooo many, across various genres.
Q. What’s next for you?
A. I need to get back to the writing cave and finish the next book in my Haven Security series. My last born son is about to start his final school exams so things will probably be a bit tense around here for a while.
Q. One outrageous goal for the future?
A. Manage to write all the books that I’ve had plot ideas for.
Q. Do you have any advice you’d like to share with other aspiring writers?
A. Write what you are passionate about and don’t let the fear of rejection keep you from submitting your manuscript.
Q. What was your favorite book when you were a child/teen?
A. Murder Most Royal by Jean Plaidy. This book also began my fascination with English history especially the Kings and Queens.
Q. Is there a song you could list as the theme song for your book or any of your characters?
A. I guess for my rugby league series it would have to be ‘We are the Champions’ by Queen and for my Haven Security series the theme from the Bodyguard movie fits nicely.
Q. If you could live anywhere in the world where would it be?
A. I love Australia and Sydney has always been my home, I would like to live closer to the water or maybe have some acreage in the country but I’m a city girl through and through and would probably miss the shopping and cafes.
Q. What is your favorite Quote?
A. “Each moment is a gift – an opportunity to learn, love, challenge or rise to the occasion.” Brother David Steindl-Rast.
Q. When you were little, what did you want to be when you “grew up”?
A. In my early teens I wanted to be a Navy Nurse. My best friend at the time was an influence in this decision. I think we romanticized the idea of two girls on a ship with lots of sailors.
Q. If a movie was made about your life, who would you want to play the lead role and why?
A. Susan Sarandon, I’ve always been a fan. My husband would say Sandra Bullock!
Q. How did you know you should become an author?
A. I didn’t until I received my first contract a few years ago.
Q. What’s the craziest writing idea you’ve had?
A. The barista at my local coffee shop has been trying to convince me to write a story with him as the hero – That would be a crazy idea, writing the erotic scenes would just be icky 😉
Q. What’s the best advice anyone has ever given you?
A. Have the courage to be imperfect and let go of who I think I should be.
Q. Hidden talent?
A. I recently discovered I could draw freehand. Wolves, flowers and butterflies are my favorite. I find it very relaxing.
