Pinterest is a great resource as it lets you, not only add in your books covers and promotions, but it gives you the ability to let fans and followers know what you are reading (Yes, fans love to see what you are reading and who your favorite authors are too).
So here are a few steps to make it easy for you to set up your author Pinterest account:
- For Pinterest you will need to set up a business account (yes as an author you are a business). Or if you already have a personal Pinterest account, you want to transfer over to a business one; head to the top right and “convert to business page”.
- Filling out your business profile, fill in as much of this as you can and don’t forget to add all those social media accounts and ways for fans to follow you on other sites. We feel it benefits you to make sure you link to Facebook and Twitter.
- Check your settings on Facebook, you don’t want to be annoying your friends and followers with everything you do on Pinterest. Log on your Facebook page and access your account settings. Then click on “Apps”. (You can find this on the navigation bar on the left side of your screen.) Find the Pinterest app and click “edit.” You will want to remove the authorizations that are not required. Now go to the “App activity privacy” section. Set the publishing to “custom” so only certain people will see your pins or “only me.”
- Create a board!! Now this is where you will start having fun (and can lose hours if you are not careful so maybe consider setting a time limit for Pinterest.) Unless you are creating a community board for your fans, set the pin authorization to just yourself. Name your board and select a category for it (Maybe this will be the title of your book, so you can share pins that help your muse or make you think of the book you are writing). Categories help other pinners find your work within Pinterest. Be creative with these boards there is so much you can do.
- Now it is time to get pinning, this is as easy as uploading a picture , adding a description and making sure you have your links so as you can direct people to your other sites also.
- Once something is pinned, it goes to the main Pinterest page. The red Pinterest logo is actually a button, click on it and you’ll be taken straight to the main page. That’s where you’ll see the pins that your friends have posted. You’ll also be able to search the site for specific things if you are looking for a specific category of something to inspire you or your muse.
- A brilliant example of how you can use Pinterest to market your book is: Tricia Goyer an author who gets the potential of Pinterest. Her boards are full of her story worlds. The pin for The Swiss Courier is spreading through Pinterest. Tricia knows that once she pins something, it lands on the home page of her followers. As followers re pin this, it will eventually show up in other news feeds through your friends pinning it also. Thus making sure that people who wouldn’t normally see her work get to see it and can possible buy and read the book also then becoming fans. Are you seeing the potential here? Credit
